Family holiday ruined after kids spend all the money on 65,000 V-Bucks in Fortnite

A Reddit user has been left to count the cost after revealing a family holiday had been spoiled, with his niece and nephew using their savings to purchase Fortnite V-Bucks without his knowledge.

V-Bucks are the virtual currency used by Epic Games allowing players to purchase the various skins, harvesting tools and gliders that are released in the item shop, as well as each season’s battle pass and tiers.

Skins can start cheap at around 800 V-Bucks, worth roughly $10, but more extravagant designs can cost players at least $24.99 to add to their locker.

V-Bucks are used to purchase cosmetic items from the item shop which rotates daily.

Reddit user u/A_Sad_Frog was left to rue his decision to allow his young niece and nephew to use his PlayStation account after they acquired over 65,000 V-Bucks despite having a verification number linked to his payment card.

He revealed that the children had spent around $531 on his account, bypassing the security measure by topping up their PlayStation wallet before each purchase.

Posting on the popular ‘Today I Fucked Up‘ subreddit, the regretful PlayStation owner explained: “All told, £422.90 ($531) had been siphoned out over a week, with most of the bombardment happening yesterday. By the time I got back into to account to assess the damage, 20,000 vbucks had already been spent.

“I saw that the Playstation wallet can be topped up before each purchase, so they must have paid for it by first buying wallet currency, which apparently didn’t require a code.”

The price of Fortnite skins make it easy to rack up a huge bill.

To make matters worse, the money was siphoned out of an account used by his girlfriend to save up for her family trip in the US – leaving her with virtually no spending money for the holiday.

He added: “I feel so terribly terribly guilty for putting my girlfriend in this situation, the kids are upset that they did it. We’re not a rich couple, and this one has hit us both pretty hard.”

Epic Games offer hope

Unfortunately for the family, the PlayStation store doesn’t offer protection against accidental purchases and the bank is unlikely to help either.

However, Epic Games may come to the rescue after community coordinator Sean ‘MrPopoTFS’ Hamilton responded to the Reddit thread asking the original poster to get in contact so they can help solve the problem.

As over 20,000 V-Bucks have already been spent, it remains to be seen whether the user will receive any of his money back as although the purchase wasn’t intended, many items are likely to have been bought using the funds.

Personal Note

We have a neighbor who we consider a close friend, she is a single mother with a two year old daughter and 12 year old son. The son happened to come by to show me that he had reached tier 100 and I noticed that he was literally only level 20 with tier 100. I began to look at his account and also noticed that he had 13,500 v-bucks. I asked him about it and he told me his friends gave him the v-bucks (obviously not true).

I asked his mother if she has allowed him to make any purchases and she said no, I asked her to check her bank and sure enough there were charges reaching a total of $360 USD via Nintendo since he was using the Nintendo Switch at the time he was making the purchases.

Chapter 3 Season 2 Live Event: Everything we know so far

The first live event of Chapter 3 is expected to take place in less than six weeks. Here’s everything we know so far, based on various leaks.

Leaked Map Stages

All future stages for the territories controlled by both The Seven and Imagined Order have been leaked by data-miner Hypex. The maps show the Resistance will retake control of most of the Island, leaving only Command Cavern and Loot Lake for the IO. The final stage will lead the story directly into a live event, with the Imagined Order having little options left for victory.

Leaked Quest Voice Line

Epic also recently added new voice lines for the upcoming Week 6 Quests which, when reviewed closely, appear to tease the main story of a new live event. The Agent Jones character claims “one of the IO’s Doomsday devices is now in production”, seemingly hinting that the new event could be related to Chapter 2 Season 2’s The Device, which was also focused around a “Doomsday Device”.

A transcript of the Agent Jones voice lines can be found below:

“This will not come as a surprise, but IO management loves Doomsday machines – loves them! There’s even a doomsday division at HQ, oh man their softball team is awful but they will one day destroy us all so… kind of a wash. We have very credible intel that one of the IO’s Doomsday devices is now in production. We need to find out everything we can while we still can. Hit the field, I’ll prep the cameras . . . I have a very bad feeling that we are not ready for what we’re gonna find out.”

Doomsday Landmark

According to Fortnite data-miner GMatrixGames, a new Landmark code-named ‘DDMachine’ has been added to the game’s tags, suggesting that the Doomsday Device described by Agent Jones could be added to the map in the future.

Less than six weeks remain until the potential live event. We’ll keep you updated with the latest leaks and official announcements.

Boogie Bomb and Rift-To-Go Unvaulted Until April 25

In preparation for the upcoming item vote, the Boogie Bomb and Rift-To-Go have both been unvaulted for a trial period until April 25.

Players can now find the items scattered throughout the Island from Chests, Llamas, Supply Drops, Loot Sharks and ground loot. Once the short trial period ends on April 25 at 8AM ET, new gold funding stations will go live in-game on the following day to let players “fund” the item they want to see return permanently (for the rest of Season 2). The item that becomes 100% funded first will automatically be reintroduced to the loot pool as soon as the goal, of which the exact value is unknown, is reached.

We’ll keep you updated on which item gets unvaulted.
